Teräosan takominen toki pyrkii suoristamaan terää, joten välillä täytyy huolehtia, että viikatteen kaarevuus pysyy ennallaan.</p> <p>Vaikka itse taotun viikatteen terän takominen on jo sinänsä oma työnsä, niin haasteellisempi osuus on terän karkaiseminen. Karkaisu voidaan tehdä veteen, mutta tämä toki vaatii pitkän muotoisen vesiastian ja samoin ahjossa tulee olla tilaa terän liikuttamiseen ja siten lämmittämiseen koko mitalta sekä karkaisua varten, että terää päästettäessä. Karkaisu vaatii myös sopivaa neutraalia valaistusta oikean päästövärin tunnistamiseksi. Lisäksi kyseessä on <em>osittainen päästäminen</em> eli viikatteen leikkaavan reunan tulee jäädä karkaistuksi, että se pitää teränsä, mutta viikatteen paksumman profiilin tulee jäädä pehmeämmäksi, että viikate kestää mahdollisia ei haluttuja osumia työskennellessä [PaPe26].
